He dreamt of a cabin in the woods. They lived near the woods, but not quite in them. They wanted space for guests to stay, and a place for adults and kids to play. They wanted a detached ADU. But getting utilities up there was going to be absurdly expensive, and the builders told them they should build more to justify the cost. Was that what they wanted? Or did they just want a nice place to hang out and enjoy the view? 

After going through the motions to see how much it would cost to build an ADU on this particularly difficult site, we were forced to step back and see what, if anything, was essential to the project. It turned out at the end of the day that it was basically just a campsite with a view. And that extra space for guests? Let the kids sleep up on the deck under the stars; there will be plenty of space left for the adults in the boring old indoors!
